Shinju Pearl embodies the rich heritage of pearling craftsmanship and cultural traditions that have flourished in Broome for decades. Our story is deeply intertwined with the Shinju Matsuri Festival, a grand celebration of Broome’s pearl industry and multicultural roots.
One of the festival’s highlights was the crowning of the Pearl Queen, a tradition that began in 1970 with Dianne Fong as the first queen. The winner was adorned with a delicate silver crown, handcrafted by renowned jeweler Robert Boyd. This exquisite crown, set with eleven sets of Japanese cultured pearls on a luxurious blue velvet headband, remained a symbol of prestige and elegance until the mid-1990s.
Our Cultural Legacy
Broome has long been a historical hub of pearling, attracting Japanese, Chinese, Malay, and Indigenous communities who contributed to the industry’s growth. The Shinju Matsuri Festival, meaning “Festival of the Pearl,” was a grand event, merging diverse cultural celebrations:
🌸 Japanese Obon Festival – A tribute to ancestors, marked by lantern ceremonies and traditional dances.
🐉 Chinese Hung-Ting Festival – A festival of remembrance, honoring the spirits of the departed.
🚢 Lugger Races – A thrilling competition featuring traditional pearl luggers, bringing together pearlers, their families, and the community.
🎭 Float Parades & Art Awards – A colorful showcase of Broome’s artistic and cultural vibrance, featuring Sammy the Dragon and community floats.
Beyond the festival, divers’ quarters on the foreshore became a lively venue for post-race celebrations, strengthening the bonds among Broome’s pearling families. Today, the Broome Historical Museum houses an extensive collection of Shinju memorabilia, preserving this remarkable history.
