Paper or Screen – Samsung’s new Color E-Paper panel paves new wave of display technology
Last month, Samsung announced a new retail-focused display solution – a new Color E-Paper product called the EM32DX that has wow’ed many clients thanks to its ability to deliver paper-like visual quality without needing a continuous power supply.
This 32-inch panel is crazy thin at just 8.6mm and at 2.5kg, so that one can easily install it even in tight spots usually seen in cafes and retail as a stylish wall display. Built with recycled plastics and eco-friendly packaging, its superior power efficiency makes it possible to use it for displaying static images while consuming negligible power.
Beyond power savings, the display delivers rich, natural colors using only six base colors, thanks to Samsung’s proprietary Color Imaging Algorithm. This technology, inspired by the Human Visual System, optimizes color ratios and arrangements to produce around 2.5 million hues — a massive leap from the 60,000 hues typical of standard e-paper.
The algorithm combines probability-based color mapping with blue-noise sampling to reduce distortion, eliminate noise, and render smooth, eye-friendly visuals. The result is a paper-like display that leaves onlookers wondering where the power cable is.
The Color E-Paper drew huge attention at Integrated Systems Europe 2025, earning three Best of Show awards and even convincing brands that were once analog-only to rethink their digital strategies. Cho shared his pride in seeing the product spark such reactions, while Ahn confirmed ongoing research aimed at expanding its color capabilities.
With its ultra-low power use, vibrant color reproduction, and environmentally friendly design, Samsung’s Color E-Paper is redefining what digital signage can be, and they plan to roll out more sizes and continue pushing the boundaries of display technology.
