Musk’s X, Google miss MY’s social media license deadline
Elon Musk’s X and Alphabet Inc.’s Google have not submitted applications for social media operating licenses under Malaysia’s new law, effective Wednesday, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
X said that its user base in Malaysia falls short of the eight million users needed for licensing. The MCMC is currently working to verify this claim.
Meanwhile, Google has expressed concerns about categorizing YouTube’s video-sharing functions within the new licensing regulations.
Similar regulatory measures are being considered in other Asian countries, including India and Australia, to hold tech firms accountable for illegal content on their platforms.
Tencent’s WeChat was the first to get a license under the new laws, followed by ByteDance’s TikTok.
