China, US Seek Calm Seas As Xi And Trump Meet In South Korea

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump met in Busan, South Korea, on Thursday, a pivotal encounter that has rekindled hope for a more stable and cooperative relationship between the world’s two largest economies.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the meeting came at a crucial time when the global environment remains fraught with uncertainty. The consensus reached between the two leaders has set a clearer path for stabilising China-US ties and promoting broader international stability.

Xi stressed that head-of-state diplomacy continues to play a central role in guiding the direction of bilateral relations. “In the face of winds, waves and challenges, the two leaders should stay the right course, navigate through the complex landscape and ensure the steady sailing forward of the giant ship of China-US relations,” he said.

The Busan meeting followed months of consistent engagement between both sides. Since the start of this year, Xi and Trump have spoken by phone three times, exchanged letters and remained in close contact. This sustained dialogue, observers note, has helped maintain overall stability in relations despite moments of friction.

Xi urged that both nations “think big” and avoid a vicious cycle of mutual retaliation, particularly in trade and economic matters. He called on both teams to continue talks “in the spirit of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit” while working to shorten the list of problems and lengthen the list of cooperation.

During the talks, Xi and Trump agreed to deepen cooperation in sectors such as trade, energy and technology, while enhancing joint efforts in combating illegal immigration, money laundering, telecom fraud and infectious diseases. They also emphasised greater people-to-people exchanges to foster understanding between citizens.

Xi took the opportunity to highlight what he described as the “secret to China’s success.” “Over the past seven decades and more, we have been working from generation to generation on the same blueprint to make it a reality. We have no intention to challenge or supplant anyone. Our focus has always been on managing China’s own affairs well, improving ourselves and sharing development opportunities with all countries across the world,” he said.

These remarks, noted Xinhua, reflect China’s firm commitment to peaceful development and win-win cooperation, a stance aimed at dispelling fears of confrontation or rivalry with the United States.

While both sides acknowledged that occasional frictions are inevitable, they agreed that the key lies in respecting each other’s core interests and addressing differences appropriately. Xi reaffirmed that cooperation benefits both nations, while confrontation harms both.

Looking ahead, China and the United States are expected to strengthen engagement, manage differences more effectively and expand areas of collaboration, ensuring that the consensus reached in Busan translates into a stable, sustainable and forward-looking partnership.
