vivo X Fold5 early hands-on: A productivity powerhouse dressed in elegance
So last week, we got the chance to experience the upcoming vivo X Fold5 foldable smartphone before its launch. As the first-ever vivo foldable to enter Malaysia, here’s what you can expect from it, and if there’s one word that can be used to summarize the goal and direction of the X Fold5, it is ‘Productivity’.
Since this year’s “tech battleground” in the foldable scene is gunning for the thin and light aspect, the X Fold5 surprisingly is competitive in this aspect, as the overall contour, shape, surface finish, and the edges make it sleek, modern, and easy to handle.
Speaking of portability, the entire device when unfolded, is just a couple of cards thick – card as in your credit card and driver’s license. And the approximately 217g of weight is just a breeze for one-handed operation via the cover screen.
Instead of going for flashy colors, vivo is opting for the opposite for the high-class, premium, C-Suite-compatible direction with the Feather White and Titanium Gray colorways.
Specifically, the Titanium Gray version comes with a dual-layer back coating by applying an additional coat over the original surface for enhanced light flow. After that, a nano-sputtering technique is applied for more light reflection, thus making it very close to actual glass.
Now, we mentioned this being a “productivity-focused” foldable just now, and that is realized via the Origin Workbench function, easily accessible by touching the little horizontal bar on the top when you’re using an app.
After that, you’ll immediately see this unique layout that features 4 small tabs on the left while the 1 big tab is your currently focused application. And vivo officially confirmed that all 5 windows are “active” at all times, so that one can, let’s say, let a YouTube tutorial run on the left side while jotting down notes on the right.
And yeah, maybe we can test-run some games with auto stage mechanics while working on something else down the line, but that’s up to another day.
Other than that, you can also find this small side button on the upper side, which is your Shortcut Button that can be reconfigured to lots of things, from switching between ring/vibrate/silent and launching the Flashflight to popping the Camera or Recorder, or literally any app that you want.
You may also find Google Gemini up and ready at all times to help with things like Screen Context, Gemini Live, Image Generation, On-Screen Text Translation via the sidebar, and more.
vivo also offers its own suite of AI-augmented features, including AI Call translation, Smart Summary for calls, on-the-fly transcription and translation for international meetings, and highly advanced document scanning and photo-to-text capabilities.
And sure enough, ZEISS still remains as a major partner for the camera works here, and the software is optimized to enable rear camera selfie where you unfold the phone and use the outer side to take a quick shot of yourself, with the cover screen filling the reference role.
All in all, the vivo X Fold5 is an interesting device to look out for if you want something that can really help you get things done. By the way, it is coming in next week, so stay tuned and get your funds ready if you have already decided to grab this, as it’ll be a hefty sum as one could expect.
