Vacheron Constantin Unveils Celestial Masterpiece

Vacheron Constantin has unveiled one of the most ambitious projects in its 270-year history. La Quête du Temps is a clock that combines fine watchmaking, decorative craftsmanship and automaton engineering.

Seven years in the making, it contains 6,293 components—2,370 for the astronomical clock and 3,923 for the automaton. The result pushes the boundaries of what watchmaking can achieve.

At its centre is an Astronomer automaton whose gestures indicate the time while pointing to the cosmos, reflecting humanity’s enduring fascination with the stars. Linked directly to the clock’s mechanism, the automaton is a horological complication in its own right, blending mechanics, artistry and narrative.

The clock’s three-tiered design includes a celestial dome showing the constellations as they appeared in Geneva on the day of the Maison’s founding in 1755, an astronomical clock with retrograde displays and a tourbillon, and a base of lapis lazuli marquetry representing the solar system.

Each element is meticulously finished with Haute Horlogerie techniques, including guillochage, engraving, and gem-setting, with more than 230 diamonds adorning the automaton and dials.

A defining aspect of La Quête du Temps is its collaborative creation, echoing Geneva’s historic établissage tradition. Watchmakers, artisans, astronomers and automaton maker François Junod worked together to develop new mechanisms, resulting in seven patent applications for the clock and eight for the automaton.

From September 17 to November 12, 2025, the clock will be the centrepiece of Mécaniques d’Art, an exhibition at the Louvre in Paris. Shown alongside treasures from the museum’s collection—spanning Renaissance clocks to ancient water timekeepers—it underscores the timeless human drive to measure and reimagine time through art and invention.
