UMMC and CelcomDigi achieve one of the first-ever multi-country live surgery using 5G-enabled AI HoloMedicine
Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and CelcomDigi has just partnered on one of the world’s first real-time, multi-country live ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) surgery powered by 5G, AI, and XR technologies — marking a significant milestone in Malaysia’s digital healthcare journey.
Led by Professor Dr. Mohd Zulkiflee bin Abu Bakar and Dr. Julius Goh Liang Chye, the live surgery was streamed live from UMMC to medical students and specialists across the United States, Asia, and Malaysia via an AI-powered HoloMedicine XR platform by apoQlar.
Powered by CelcomDigi’s ultra-low latency 5G network, the high-definition, real-time transmission enabled remote proctoring, two-way clinical feedback, and precise observation of critical surgical steps — demonstrating how 5G-enabled XR can transform surgical training, cross-border collaboration, and medical education.
Building on this success, UMMC has planned a series of upcoming live surgical demonstrations, including urology procedures that enable remote observation and interactive learning through 5G and AI-powered HoloMedicine, colorectal surgeries that highlight the XR platform’s versatility across multiple specialties in complex clinical settings, and additional ENT cases aimed at expanding regional access to advanced surgical techniques and specialist mentorship.
Not only that, this initiative demonstrates how emerging technologies can be safely integrated into real clinical settings, enhancing surgical workflows and medical training without compromising patient care.
It also provides a practical foundation for hospitals to adopt similar innovations, as CelcomDigi continues to support healthcare digitalization and strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional medical innovation hub.
