Sarawak’s AirBorneo Set To Launch In 2026

Sarawak’s new airline, AirBorneo, will begin operations in 2026, aligning with the state’s goal of improving regional connectivity within ASEAN, according to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The airline aims to foster stronger ties with ASEAN countries, promoting trade, investment, and tourism.

Abang Johari highlighted that the establishment of AirBorneo is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to leverage its geographical advantages, rich resources, and cultural ties to drive regional growth and enhance livelihoods. The announcement was made during his speech at the 33rd ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting’s gala dinner.

His deputy, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, read out the speech, in which the Premier emphasised Sarawak’s commitment to improving air connectivity, making travel and business more efficient across ASEAN’s major cities. This move will provide faster access to vital capital cities in the region, he said.

Further plans include the development of a new international airport and a deep-sea port in Tanjung Embang, Kota Samarahan, aimed at turning Sarawak into a regional aviation and marine hub. These infrastructure upgrades will enhance the state’s connectivity and attractiveness to businesses, investors, and tourists.

The Premier also underscored Sarawak’s potential role in strengthening the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). With Sarawak’s shared borders with Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia, the state stands to benefit from cross-border economic development and strategic initiatives. The relocation of Indonesia’s capital to Kalimantan is expected to create new investment, trade, and infrastructure opportunities for the Borneo region.

The gala dinner was attended by key figures, including the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, and ASEAN Secretary General Dr Kao Kim Hourn. The ongoing ASCC Council Meeting, from April 22 to 26, is a biannual gathering of ASEAN ministers to address key socio-cultural issues within the region.
