Starting later this month, SmartThings will begin rolling out this industry-first update to its existing list of Matter-supported devices, which already includes lights, door locks, switches, and various sensors.

For those who don’t know, Matter is a connectivity standard created by CSA to get IoT devices to work under an open-source protocol, with version 1.5 bringing in camera support that covers everything from indoor and outdoor security cameras to video doorbells.

It also enables core features like live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event history, and even pan-tilt-zoom controls, while also improving support for closures like blinds, awnings, and garage doors, alongside better energy management features.

For developers, Samsung said that by using Matter 1.5, no more custom APIs are required as the open source standard is enough to keep things going, leading to smoother integration down the line.

As for the actual “Matter-compatible cameras”, global IoT players such as Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam are currently rounding up R&D cycles with commercial release of products expected to be around March next year. At the same time, SmartThings continues to support a wide range of camera brands like Aqara, Arlo, Hue, and Ring across different protocols, meaning users will soon have even more choice without worrying about compatibility headaches.
