Petronas Yet To Finalise Gas Deal With Sarawak
According to Law Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is still engaged in discussions with Sarawak’s oil and gas company to finalise a new cooperation framework. This framework is a key part of ongoing efforts to resolve a long-standing dispute over gas resources in the state.
The framework, which was first mentioned in a joint declaration signed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg in May, will be built upon a set of agreed-upon principles between the two parties.
The announcement signals a formal step toward de-escalating tensions and establishing a more collaborative relationship between the national oil company and the state, which has been a contentious issue for years. By focusing on a structured framework, both sides aim to create a lasting solution that respects the interests of both the federal government and the state of Sarawak.
