Report: Apple to Reserve OLED Screens for High-End M6 MacBook Pro Models

Apple may be planning a significant strategic shift for its future MacBook Pro lineup, reserving premium OLED display technology exclusively for its highest-tier M6 Pro and M6 Max models, according to a new report. This move would leave the entry-level M6 MacBook Pro with a standard LCD screen.

The information, originating from Mark Gurman’s “Power On” newsletter for Bloomberg, suggests this new display strategy will be part of the M6 generation of laptops, which are anticipated to launch in late 2026 or early 2027.

This would mark a new step in Apple’s “good, better, best” pricing strategy, applying a major, visible feature difference not just between product lines (like MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro), but within the Pro family itself. The base M6 model would reportedly miss out on the OLED upgrade, retaining the current LCD TFT screen technology.

The M6 generation of Pros is also rumoured to feature a significant chassis redesign, resulting in a thinner device. The long-rumoured addition of a touchscreen to the Mac could also debut with this model.

By limiting the advanced OLED screen, known for its superior contrast and deeper blacks, to the more expensive M6 Pro and M6 Max versions, Apple could provide a more tangible and visually compelling reason for customers to upgrade. A visible screen enhancement often has a greater impact on purchasing decisions than internal processor speed boosts alone.

This news comes as Apple is expected to first roll out its M5-generation chips in the first half of 2026, beginning with the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros. The M6 cycle would reportedly kick off later with the launch of the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, which, according to this report, would be the model to forgo the new screen.
