New Apple Framework Reportedly Aims to Ease iOS-to-Android App Data Migration

Apple Reportedly Developing ‘AppMigrationKit’ for iOS-Android Data Migration

Apple is reportedly developing a new developer framework called “AppMigrationKit,” a tool designed to allow users to migrate third-party app data between iPhones and Android devices, according to a report from 9to5Mac. Apple has not officially confirmed the framework’s existence.

The report, which cites newly published (but unannounced) developer documentation, claims the new framework is currently in beta and will be compatible with devices running iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1 or later. According to the documentation found by 9to5Mac, AppMigrationKit is built to facilitate “a one-time transfer of app data between Apple and non-Apple platforms.”

Apple AppMigrationKit Framework

If true, this move would signal a major shift in Apple’s approach to its ecosystem. The documentation reportedly states the framework is not for migrating data between two Apple devices (like an iPhone and an iPad) but is exclusively for transferring data to and from “non-Apple platforms,” with Android being the primary example.

For the system to work, developers would need to adopt the new framework. 9to5Mac reports this involves creating an app extension that conforms to the AppMigrationExtension protocol. Developers could then define whether their app will be able to import data, export data, or do both. When a user initiates a device setup and migration, all apps that have implemented AppMigrationKit would have their data included in the transfer package.

This framework would also reportedly work alongside a new “Transfer to Android” feature, which has been spotted in beta versions of iOS. This option is expected to appear under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. This would create a two-way bridge for users, as a similar “Transfer to iPhone” feature is also anticipated on the Android side.

While AppMigrationKit is still in development and “subject to change,” according to the report, the discovery of its documentation indicates that an official launch could be on the near horizon. This development could ease a major pain point for users switching platforms and address long-standing criticisms of the “walled garden” ecosystem.
