Louis Vuitton Highlights Portugal In New Production Push

Louis Vuitton is now adding “Made in Portugal” to selected leather accessories — and it’s a detail worth noticing. The development, reported by Fashion Network, puts a spotlight on Portugal’s growing influence in the luxury supply chain.

For years, Louis Vuitton has produced leather components in Portugal, though many items were ultimately assembled elsewhere, mainly in Italy. Now, some pieces are officially bearing the Portuguese designation.

According to Público, the shift has been confirmed by APICCAPS, the body representing the country’s footwear and leather goods manufacturers.

So what does that look like in practice? The LV Mocho earphone case is one example currently labelled “Made in Portugal”. It’s a small accessory, but it reflects something bigger: Portugal isn’t just supplying materials — it’s contributing recognised craftsmanship to global luxury products.

The figures show why that matters. Data from Statistics Portugal (INE) reveals the country exported more than €353 million in leather goods last year.

While that’s slightly down on the previous year, exports have climbed sharply since 2020, indicating sustained growth and international demand.

At the recent Micam trade fair in Milan, Portugal’s Secretary of State for the Economy, João Rui Ferreira, described the adoption of the label as a step towards strengthening the country’s position as a luxury producer. With around 80 Portuguese companies attending, the message was clear: the focus is on value, not volume.

Behind the scenes, much of Louis Vuitton’s Portuguese production runs through Atepeli – Ateliers de Portugal.

The company has been producing leather goods components and luxury footwear since 2011, with multiple sites across northern Portugal. In 2020, it expanded further, opening a new facility in São João de Ver and creating hundreds of jobs in the process.
