HUAWEI is reportedly preparing to shake up the smartphone photography market once again with its upcoming HUAWEI Pura 90 Ultra. New leaks surfacing today suggest the flagship device will feature a radical redesign and a massive leap in telephoto technology.
According to reports from Huawei Central and GSMArena, the HUAWEI Pura 90 Ultra will likely abandon the traditional periscope sensors of its predecessors in favour of a 200MP SmartSens SCC80XS sensor. If confirmed, this would mark HUAWEI’s entry into the high-resolution zoom race, potentially offering unprecedented clarity for long-range shots.
The headline feature is the rumoured switch to the SmartSens SCC80XS, a 1/1.28-inch sensor built on 22nm process technology. With 0.61µm pixels, this sensor is designed to deliver superior low-light performance and high quantum efficiency.
This is a significant departure from the Pura 80 Ultra, which featured a 50MP periscope lens. The move to 200MP allows for aggressive cropping without loss of detail, enabling the phone to capture sharp images at extreme digital zoom levels. The sensor also reportedly supports 4K video recording at 120fps, making it a versatile tool for videographers.
While the zoom lens is grabbing headlines, the main camera remains a powerhouse. The leaks suggest that the device will feature a 1-inch 50MP primary sensor, paired with Huawei’s signature variable aperture technology. This system allows the lens to physically adjust its opening to control light intake and depth of field, a feature that has become a staple of HUAWEI’s top-tier phones.
Beyond the specs, the HUAWEI Pura 90 Ultra is expected to sport a new look. Leaked sketches suggest that while the iconic triangular camera arrangement will remain, it will now be housed within a horizontal camera bar across the back of the device. This design evolution would distinguish the Pura 90 Ultra from the Pura 70 and 80 series, giving it a fresh aesthetic for 2026.
