Job Scams Surge in Malaysia: Jobstreet by SEEK Steps Up Protection for Jobseekers
Job hunting in Malaysia has become increasingly perilous amid a sharp rise in job scams. Fraudsters are exploiting the hopes of jobseekers through fake offers and deceptive tactics, resulting in financial losses, identity theft, and diminished trust in legitimate opportunities.
As a trusted career platform, Jobstreet by SEEK is leading efforts to tackle these scams by implementing robust screening processes, prioritising data protection, and shielding users from unethical recruitment practices, including risks related to modern slavery. The company’s latest data confirms a worrying trend of scam proliferation across the region.
Common Scams to Watch Out For
Cryptocurrency Task Fraud
This scam lures jobseekers with promises of easy crypto earnings for completing simple online tasks. Victims are often asked to make an upfront payment or purchase cryptocurrency to unlock earning opportunities—only for the scammers to disappear once payment is made.
Money Mule Scheme
Victims are tricked into transferring illegally obtained funds, believing they are performing legitimate job duties. Involvement, even unwittingly, can lead to criminal charges and financial penalties.
Identity Theft Scam
Fraudsters pose as reputable employers to collect personal data under the guise of recruitment. Information such as bank details and ID copies are later used for fraudulent activities, leaving victims with long-term financial and legal complications.
Impersonation Scams
Scammers contact victims through WhatsApp, phone calls, or social media, impersonating recruiters or platforms like Jobstreet. Victims are pushed to share personal details or engage via unofficial channels. Jobstreet by SEEK stresses that it communicates only through secure, verified platforms and will never request information through unofficial means.
A Coordinated Response to a Growing Threat
In the first half of 2024, job scams reached record levels. To counter this, Jobstreet by SEEK introduced a suite of protective measures:
- Rigorous vetting of job ads and employers
- Enhanced cyber threat monitoring
- Prioritisation of user data protection
- Ongoing education to help jobseekers recognise red flags
Between July 2023 and June 2024, Jobstreet by SEEK reviewed 4.9 million job ads across Asia-Pacific, flagging 10% for further investigation. Over 1,400 high-risk employers were blocked, and more than 1,200 fraudulent listings were removed thanks to proactive checks and community reports.
“Scammers prey on jobseekers who may overlook red flags in their desperation to secure employment. Beyond the financial harm, these scams often leave victims disillusioned and reluctant to continue their job search,” said Nicholas Lam, Managing Director at Jobstreet by SEEK Malaysia. “Raising awareness and encouraging vigilance are key to addressing the issue.”
The platform continues to work closely with local authorities and enhance fraud detection systems, with a strong focus on fair hiring, anti-exploitation efforts, and community trust.
Jobseekers are advised to stay alert and stay safe, and:
- Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true
- Avoid sharing personal or financial details outside secure platforms
- Report any suspicious activity immediately
