High Level Fun But Too Low On The Horror
After three years—and an ending that strongly hinted at a sequel—M3GAN 2.0 has finally arrived. Based on the trailer, the film appeared to lean more heavily into action than its predecessor, trading psychological tension for high-energy spectacle. There was also a noticeable increase in the camp factor (that is, an intentionally exaggerated, theatrical style often embraced for its over-the-top or ironic appeal). For those who loved the original film for its sci-fi, camp factor, and horror elements, does the film hold up?
What’s The Film All About
The story takes place two years after the original M3GAN went rogue. Gemma, its creator, now an advocate for AI regulation, discovers a new threat: AMELIA, a military android created using stolen M3GAN technology that becomes self-aware and escapes. To stop AMELIA’s plan for an AI takeover, Gemma reluctantly resurrects M3GAN, who has survived in digital form, and they team up along with others to thwart AMELIA’s dangerous ambitions.
What’s Great About the Film
The biggest highlight of the film has to be its sci-fi elements. One of the first things that stands out is how smoothly the robotic movements are depicted, along with the technical applications that reinforce the film’s central themes. Without giving anything away, the way the creators handled the design and mechanics of robotic motion and construction was genuinely fascinating. The attention to detail in how each piece was crafted and seamlessly integrated into the visual storytelling made it a real treat for the eyes.
Another strong point of the film is the choreography in the action scenes. Each sequence is fast-paced but remains clear and well-executed, with thoughtful interaction between the characters and their environment. And for fans of the iconic dance scene from the first film—don’t worry, there’s a fun little moment tucked in just for you.
Beyond the design and choreography, the film also offers an engaging look at how the characters’ relationships have evolved. Unlike many sequels, there’s a clear sense of time having passed, and each character has changed in subtle but meaningful ways.
What Could Have Been Better
A stark difference in the sequel lies in its genre shift. While the sci-fi elements are still very much present—and well-executed—the horror that made the first film so memorable and campy is noticeably toned down. There’s no denying that the sci-fi and action are engaging, but it was the horror that initially hooked audiences. The sequel could have benefited from leaning more into that genre, slowing the pace at times, building tension, and amplifying the shock or thriller aspects.
Aside from the lack of horror, the film also leans too heavily into hammering home its core theme. It becomes so overt that by the time the twist arrives, it feels predictable rather than impactful. While the message is interesting, it doesn’t quite land emotionally and may end up being a forgettable part of viewers’ overall impression. With a bit more balance—dialling back the exposition and recapturing what made the first film stand out—the sequel could have left a stronger mark beyond just its action and character dynamics.
What’s The Verdict
The action and sci-fi elements left an 8/10 impression, but the lack of horror and the heavy-handed delivery of the film’s central theme ultimately brought my overall rating down to a 7/10. On the general audience side, per IMDb ratings, M3GAN 2.0 currently holds a score of 6.2/10 based on over 15,000 user ratings.
Meanwhile, on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 57% Tomatometer score based on 220 critic reviews, indicating a fairly mixed reception from critics. However, general audiences seemed to respond more positively, with an impressive 82% on the Popcorn Score, based on over a thousand verified ratings. This contrast suggests that while the film may not have hit all the right notes for reviewers, it still delivered enough entertainment value and fan service to satisfy a good portion of its audience.
