AirBorneo To Launch Jet Services In July, Strengthening Sarawak’s Regional Connectivity

Sarawak-owned AirBorneo will begin operating jet aircraft in July 2026, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced, marking a key step in the state’s plan to boost regional air connectivity.

The Premier said initial operations will start next month using turboprop aircraft before transitioning to jets.

Abang Johari also revealed that Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong welcomed plans for direct flights between Sarawak and Singapore, while Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke has given the proposal the green light.

“AirBorneo also aims to expand routes to Jeju Island in South Korea, linking Unesco Global Geoparks between the two regions.

“At the same time, AirBorneo’s growth will also complement Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) efforts in hospitality, infrastructure and tourism, while pioneering future industries such as renewable energy, algae-based fuels and tech-driven ventures,” he said, while emphasising the state’s ambition to create sustainable growth and uplift the standard of living for Sarawakians.

The Premier expressed optimism that AirBorneo and SEDC initiatives will make Sarawak a regional aviation and green technology hub, paving the way for a bright economic future.
