‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ Is Officially Happening
Warner Bros. is heading back to the blocky universe that surprised Hollywood in 2025, with the sequel to A Minecraft Movie now officially locked in. According to reports, “A Minecraft Movie Squared” is the title of the follow-up, with the film confirmed for a global cinema release on July 23, 2027.
The announcement came straight from the New Zealand set during a Minecraft Live broadcast, with Jack Black and Jason Momoa fronting the reveal. It’s a clear signal that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are doubling down on a franchise that massively outperformed expectations the first time round.
That original film wasn’t just a hit — it became one of the most successful video game adaptations ever, pulling in close to US$960 million worldwide after a strong US$163 million domestic opening. The performance has effectively turned the project into a full franchise for Warner Bros.
Behind the camera, Jared Hess returns to direct and co-write the script with Chris Galletta, keeping the same comedic tone that helped the first film land with audiences. The core cast is also back, including Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry and Jennifer Coolidge, alongside Black’s Steve and Momoa’s Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison.
One of the biggest updates this time is the addition of Kirsten Dunst, who joins as Alex — the iconic female counterpart to Steve. She replaces Kate McKinnon, who briefly appeared in the first film’s post-credits scene, suggesting the sequel will expand that character.
Plot details are still being kept quiet, but the team has hinted at a broader world-building approach, moving through new biomes and deeper layers of the Overworld. Alongside the film, Warner Bros. and Legendary are also rolling out a fan build competition, where selected Minecraft creations could end up featured in the movie itself.
With filming already underway in New Zealand and momentum building around the project, “A Minecraft Movie Squared” is shaping up to be one of 2027’s key studio releases — and a direct continuation of a franchise that’s quickly become a major player in gaming-to-film adaptations.
