Inaugural TATESC Comics Global Awards Open for Submissions
Renowned anime and manga producer KADOKAWA Group has announced the first-ever TATESC Comics Global Awards, inviting aspiring comic creators from around the world to participate in this prestigious competition. With US$15,000 in prize money for the winner of each language category, this groundbreaking event is set to highlight global talent in the world of vertical scrolling comics.
What is TATESC?
TATESC, a vertical scrolling comic label created by KADOKAWA Group in 2021, was designed to cater to the modern reader. The format is optimized for consumption on mobile devices, tablets, and PCs, reflecting changing trends in comic readership.
The term TATESC originates from two Japanese words:
- “Tate” (縦) meaning “stand up” or vertical.
- The first syllable of “Scroll”, symbolizing the vertical scrolling format of the comics.
A Truly Global Competition
In its third iteration, the TATESC competition has evolved into a global platform, welcoming submissions in six languages:
- English
- Malay
- Traditional Chinese
- Simplified Chinese
- Thai
- Japanese
Submissions in Malay and Simplified Chinese will be managed by KADOKAWA’s Malaysian subsidiary, Kadokawa Gempak Starz (KGS) Sdn Bhd, highlighting the group’s commitment to nurturing local and regional talent.
“This global milestone has been made possible through the cooperation of all KADOKAWA Group’s overseas subsidiaries,” said Chris Yew, CEO of KGS. “Opening the boundaries allows avid comic writers the opportunity to portray their talents and shine in the world of TATESC comics.”
