The Story of SugarBun

SugarBun is a Malaysian fast-food chain that has grown from a humble ice cream parlor in 1979 to a renowned international franchise. Known for its signature broasted chicken, burgers, and milkshakes, SugarBun has expanded across Malaysia, Brunei, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, and even Australia.

Founded by Wung Wei Kee, the first SugarBun outlet opened at Kenyalang Commercial Centre in Kuching, Sarawak. The name “SugarBun” was inspired by a phrase Wung saw during a visit to Taiwan. Initially, the brand focused on ice cream, but Wung’s brother saw an opportunity to serve fried chicken instead.

With the help of an American friend, Wung was introduced to the broaster fryer, a unique cooking technique that pressure-fries chicken, keeping it juicy, crispy, and full of flavor. This innovation became the cornerstone of SugarBun’s menu, setting it apart from other fast-food chains.
