Chatime Franchise Business Opportunity
A Vision for Bubble Tea Excellence
Making a cup of bubble tea may not be as complex as designing a Mars rover, but breaking into an unpredictable and highly competitive market requires strategy, resilience, and innovation. Aliza Ali, the entrepreneur, founder, and Group Managing Director of Chatime Malaysia, has done just that—turning a passion into a thriving business empire.
Chatime, the globally recognized Taiwanese bubble tea brand, made its entrance into the Malaysian market several years ago. At that time, Aliza was a corporate executive in the oil & gas industry, working a demanding 9-to-5 job. However, her love for the milky-sweet indulgence of Chatime’s bubble tea sparked a bold vision—to build a business of her own and take the brand to new heights in Malaysia.
The Birth of a Business Empire
Aliza’s entrepreneurial journey took flight in 2011 when she, alongside her trusted business partner Widayu Latiff, launched Malaysia’s first Chatime outlet in Genting Highlands. The high-altitude location proved to be a golden opportunity, as the store quickly gained traction and exceeded expectations.
Fueled by their initial success, Aliza and Widayu expanded into KL Sentral, a major transportation hub, where their second outlet achieved a remarkable feat—it became the highest-grossing Chatime store globally. Out of 1,800 Chatime locations across 36 countries, their two stores stood at the top, a monumental achievement that validated their business acumen and strategic vision.
Despite her background in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London, Aliza’s true passion lay in business. She had long believed that with careful planning, calculated risks, and persistence, she could transform opportunities into success. And she did.
The Turning Point: A Test of Resilience
In 2017, Chatime Malaysia faced an industry-shaking crisis. A legal dispute with the previous licensor created uncertainty, leaving franchisees frustrated and uncertain about the brand’s future. When 161 business partners chose to switch to a different brand, Aliza made a defining decision—she stood her ground.
Instead of walking away, she saw an opportunity to rebuild and strengthen Chatime Malaysia. While five public-listed corporations attempted to secure the brand’s master license from Taiwan and failed, Aliza was given a game-changing opportunity. She received a personal call from Chatime’s Chairman, offering her the exclusive master franchise rights for Malaysia—a multimillion-dollar deal that would cement her place as the new face of Chatime in the country.
The acquisition wasn’t easy. Without external financial backing, Aliza and Widayu relied on bootstrapping and self-funding to resurrect the brand. Yet, with their hands-on leadership and deep understanding of the business, they navigated the turbulent period with remarkable success.
A Bold Comeback: Rebuilding Chatime Malaysia
Under their leadership, Chatime Malaysia made a triumphant return. Within just eight months of acquiring the master license, they successfully expanded to 40 new outlets.
With a renewed focus on:
- Branding & Marketing – Strengthening Chatime’s presence in the Malaysian market.
- Product Innovation – Introducing new flavors and improving quality standards.
- Customer Experience – Ensuring consistency, excellence, and personalized service.
Aliza’s philosophy remains simple:
“You don’t just run this business without knowing the process from start to finish. I know how to make every single drink on the menu. If I run out of milk, I go out and get it because no one is going to hand it down to help you.”
This hands-on approach has been instrumental in Chatime Malaysia’s resurgence and expansion, proving that true leadership is built on passion, perseverance, and vision.
