A Legacy of Innovation and Convenience Since 1927
7-Eleven has transformed the way people shop for everyday essentials, evolving from a small ice storefront in Dallas, Texas, to a global leader in convenience retail. Founded in 1927, the company’s origins trace back to John Jefferson Green, an employee of the Southland Ice Company, who started selling eggs, milk, and bread alongside ice to provide greater convenience to customers.
Recognizing the potential of on-the-go shopping, Southland Ice Company director Joe C. Thompson Sr. expanded this model, eventually acquiring the company and rebranding it as Southland Corporation. By 1928, the stores adopted a unique marketing strategy, placing totem poles outside their locations, leading to the name “Tote’m Stores.”
Expanding Services & Becoming 7-Eleven
Despite financial struggles during the Great Depression (1931), Southland survived through reorganization and strategic investments. Post-World War II, the company aimed to modernize and expand, leading to a groundbreaking change in 1946—renaming the stores 7-Eleven to reflect their extended operating hours from 7 AM to 11 PM, a novelty at the time.
By 1963, the brand pioneered 24-hour operations in response to customer demand in Austin, Texas, soon followed by other cities like Dallas, Fort Worth, and Las Vegas. This innovation cemented 7-Eleven’s reputation as the ultimate convenience store.
The company further expanded its reach through franchising, acquiring 126 Speedee Mart stores in California (1963) and signing its first U.S. licensing agreement in 1968 with Garb-Ko, Inc. of Saginaw, Michigan.
Overcoming Challenges & Global Expansion
In the 1980s, 7-Eleven faced financial hurdles, including a rumored corporate takeover. To prevent this, the Thompson family initiated a management buyout in 1987. However, the 1987 stock market crash complicated financing, leading to the sale of non-core assets like Chief Auto Parts and hundreds of store locations.
By 1990, Southland filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy but successfully re-emerged in 1991 with financial support from Seven-Eleven Japan and Ito-Yokado, which took a 70% stake in the company. This restructuring marked the beginning of 7-Eleven’s Japanese ownership and revitalization.
In 1999, Southland Corporation officially changed its name to 7-Eleven, Inc., reflecting its sole focus on convenience retail. By 2005, Seven-Eleven Japan became the full owner of 7-Eleven, further strengthening its presence worldwide.

- 2021: Launched a $70 million ad campaign, emphasizing high-quality food options beyond traditional convenience store offerings.
- 2024: Faced a buyout offer from Alimentation Couche-Tard (Circle K), which was later rejected by Seven & i Holdings.
