OPPO Reno15 review | Nasi Lemak Tech

OPPO finally revealed the new Reno15 series of smartphones – and what we have now is the new Reno15 5G. There are a lot of other variants within the whole series, but that’s not the main point.

So, with the release of the Reno15, there are a lot of other features brought to the table. Let’s review and see how good the Reno15 truly is.

Design

Let’s start off with the design. The Reno15 series all come with this fancy Dancing Aurora design. Yeah, I can see why they call it as such because it really does look like the aurora lights dancing at the back of the phone. It looks super beautiful, actually.

It is a matte finish with some very fine sandy texture on it to improve grip.

Screen

Now, let’s talk about the screen. The Reno15 is surprisingly one of those compact-ish phones that I personally like a lot. The Reno15 is equipped with a 6.32-inch AMOLED screen with a rather high resolution of 2640×1216 pixels and also goes up to 120Hz refresh rate.

When we tested this display, it is actually quite a decent one. Out of the box, we can get around nearly 1200 nits in max auto brightness, and it also goes down to around 2 nits in its lowest brightness. Yes, we’re adding the lowest brightness measurement in our test as well because I realize a lot of people use their devices in the dark.

This Reno15 does come with three different color profiles in the settings menu, so we’re going to test it using the Standard color profile first.

OPPO Reno15 review 4

We have a pretty typical color gamut coverage with great ΔE numbers across the board, though it is not as saturated since the DCI-P3 coverage is quite low.

Then, we have the Natural color profile. It’s pretty similar to the Standard color profile, but the overall color gamut coverage is slowly lower than the standard color profile.

Lastly, we have the Vivid color profile. This bumps up the color gamut coverage to the highest possible, covering up to 97.4% in DCI-P3. It’s not the most vivid color possible, but it’s actually very good already. Even the color accuracy is still very, very low as the ΔE number is way below 1.0.

So, overall, very good screen on this phone.

Performance

The performance of this phone is something that we have to talk about. This Reno15 is equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chipset. As of the time we’re recording this review, this Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is still the highest-end Snapdragon 7-series chipset that we have.

The performance though, well – let’s summarize our gaming test a little. Genshin Impact recommended the “medium” graphical preset, but it can’t even sustain 30fps. Then, we bumped it to the lowest graphical settings, but it still can’t sustain 50fps.

For Zenless Zone Zero, we just went to the lowest graphical settings, and the fight was below 30fps throughout the entire fight. It’s actually still playable since there aren’t any major frame dips, but I definitely expected at least 30fps.

Wuthering Waves is similar to Zenless Zone Zero, as we’re also playing it at the lowest graphical settings, but the performance is just not that good. It’s even more terrible when we’re fighting the nest. It literally went down to become a slideshow.

Simpler games do run fine though, like COD Mobile and also Destiny Rising. So, if you want to look at all the FPS graphs, the power consumption, frame times, temperature, render resolution, all of that stuff – watch our full gaming test video down below.

Battery life

The battery life of this phone though, is actually amazing. It is equipped with a 6,500mAh battery, or 25.48Wh. Remember, watthour is a much better way of measure a battery’s capacity compared to mAh. Watch this video to know why mAh is stupid.

Using our standardized battery life test, we can achieve around 24 hours and 39 minutes. This is really, really good and can last you through nearly two days of usage.

Charging speed

As for the charging speed, OPPO is actually doing a really good job here. So, it comes with an 80W proprietary charger and cable in the box, and we can charge it from 15% to completion in around 42 minutes. It’s actually very good for a battery of this size.

Then, we can head into the settings menu and change it to the fastest charging speed and that doesn’t actually improve things much. It just improved the charging speed by around a minute or two.

Lastly, we tried the charging test again using our USB-PD PPS charger and it can charge from 15% to completion in around 50 minutes. It’s a bit slower than the proprietary charger and cable, but nothing super different. The phone only takes around 42W at most when we use a USB-PD PPS charger, though.

Software

Then, we have the software. It’s using OPPO’s ColorOS 16 running on top of Android 16 – and it’s super smooth to use. Again, the first thing I’ll do is to speed up the animation because it’s just way too slow originally, and there are a lot of bloatware that we have to manually disable and remove.

Other than that, I’m actually surprised that all the expected features from the flagships are also present here. For example, the AI Mind Space is here too. It’s not as integrated as the flagships since there is no side button, but we can still take a screenshot and send it to the Mind Space.

We also do have some fancy features like the popout feature to do a picture like this. It’s easy to do. Just choose two or three pictures, then press the collage button and select which image in the collage to popout. Then it’ll do some AI magic and poof – there we go. It’s actually a quirky feature that I think many people will use.

Camera

And of course, the cameras. Despite being a mid-range phone, the Reno15 is actually equipped with some pretty good lenses, especially that 85mm lens for the telephoto.

A few more things to mention

Finally, there are a few more things we need to mention quickly. The OPPO Reno15 comes with a USB 2.0 port at the bottom with no display output capability, has dual SIM card slots, and also an IR blaster at the top for the remote control functionality. That’s about it.

Should you buy the OPPO Reno15 5G?

Now, should you buy the OPPO Reno15? The starting price for the Reno15 with 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage is at RM1,999. I actually think the price is reasonable in this case as other phones in this caliber is around this price point too.

We also have the 512GB storage variant but the price is jacked up to RM2,399 and that’s quite a big price premium over the 256GB variant. Overall, I think this OPPO Reno15 is actually a good choice if you’re shopping for an upper mid-range smartphone right now.
